*Remembering Erwadi, 6th August 2010*

August 6th is a date many of us will remember with pain and anguish, as the
“Erwadi Tragedy” when 25 persons with mental disabilities were charred to
death around the precincts of a Dargah in rural Tamil Nadu. As people, as
organizations, and as human rights movements we have commemorated the 6th of
August every year in our own ways.

Our pain and anguish in these years has not been only for those who perished
in that fire but also for those who continue to struggle to attain a life of
dignity, peace, love, emotional nourishment and self fulfillment. As
societies, we all yearn to board that train to a society of harmony,
connection and fulfillment of our life purpose.

This year, in Pune, *Schizophrenia Awareness Association* and the *Bapu
Trust for Research on Mind & Discourse *offer spaces at Fergusson College to
revisit our dream for peaceful neighborhoods, mentally healthy societies and
a world of dignity for persons living with a mental illness and their
families.
