PRESS INVITATION

VENUE: PRESS CLUB, NEW DELHI
*
*Time and Date: **3.30 **PM--- **31 **August 2010---(Tuesday)*
***A Date Line with Jangalmahal*
*SHOCKING FACTS FROM LALGARH!*

Manik Mandal, a Bengali writer was arrested on 15 May 2010 along with a
scientist, Nisha Biswas and a teacher at Lalgarh in West Midnapur, West
Bengal by the Bengal Police. Three journalists were also detained along with
them for few hours. These three intellectuals were put in a Conspiracy Case
under sections 120A, 120B, 122, 123, 124. They were incarcerated in prison
for 43 days for having conspired to overthrow an elected government. And
what was their so-called conspiracy? *That they took the trouble to go to
Lalgarh region under the crosshairs of the war machine of joint security
forces to get firsthand information of the prevailing situation there. In
fact this has been a long standing demand of the intellectuals and other
social activists in the country for free access to all regions where the
State has held the people fighting for their lives and livelihoods under
siege.*

The three intellectuals were released recently on bail. However, they
continue to face the Conspiracy Case framed on them by the West Bengal
government.

Manik Mandal, the Bengali novelist will address the Press Conference to
reveal some of the damning details that he was witness to not only in
Jangalmahal but also in those eventful days in the prison where he could
talk first hand to a cross section of the PCAPA activists held under various
charges as well as the prisoners held under the Jnaneshwari train sabotage.

Prof Amit Bhaduri, professor emeritus JNU, Sumit Chakravartty, editor *
Mainstream* weekly, and Prashant Bhushan, senior advocate, Supreme Court of
India will also address the press conference.

"After a war, the silencing of arms is not enough. Peace means respecting
all rights. You can’t respect one of them and violate the others. When a
society doesn’t respect the rights of its citizens, it undermines peace and
leads it back to war.”
