There is so much talk about infrastructure investment but not the basic
infrastructure investment in sanitation , clean water , public schools( In
Singapore the best schools are Public Schools that is State aided who leave
the private schools behind in standards and merit ) , public health
amenities , maternal and child nutrition , housing , parks , botancial gardens
, playgrounds and libraries and cultural centres for children and youth
WITHOUT WHICH NO COUNTRY CAN BE CONSIDERED CIVILIZED .
There has to be an even focus on all sectors . Luxury infrastructure to-day is
the priority from one city to another with a neglect of public needs .
Different budgetary allocations for different classes of citizens even though
the Indirect Taxes take away a higher percentage of the meagre earnings of
working people than the impact of direct taxes on more affluent classes .
Their contribution to the national budget similarly is higher in respect of
working and middle income groups for the country as a whole .
A PUBLIC COMMISSION OF THOSE WITH IMPECCABLE PROBITY MUST PROBE THE
SQUANDERING OF NATIONAL RESOURCES OF THE PEOPLE OF INDIA IN THE COMMONWEALTH
GAMES .
Sanitation and hygiene awareness must begin at the pre primary and school
level accompanied by the creation of the infrastructure through which the
awareness can be implemented .Mere teaching of hygiene without the facilities
to maintain hygiene serves no purpose .
The government as of now is unable to prevent the immersion at Ganesh Chaturthi
of plaster , chemicals and spurious material into the sea and river waters and
school children are invited to clean up beaches after the plaster and paint is
thrown into the sea and river waters .The immersion should be directed into
artificial ponds away from the city and town ship .A folk festival to honour
the elephant god popularized by Lok Manya Tilak to defeat the ban on political
meetings against foreign rule , is now the instrument of extensive pollution
. The financial collections acting as a deterrent on the control of pollution
of sea and river waters near human habitation .

Thank you for this down to earth communication . I hope those who talk
about being the next Super Power are reading carefully your communication below
and the sordid reality of the day to day existence of women and men a far cry
from so called empowerment .
Ironically Mahatma Gandhi who is dismissed as " political theatre" was one
of the very few who talked about the essential issues which would liberate
India , the necessity to free India its villages , towns and cities from
squalor and " filth " which the Commonwealth Games Village has been described
as in the international media a reflection on governance .
The Commonwealth Games brings the Indian financier and political class down
to earth and exposes the seamier side of the Indian story ,humbling those who
arrogantly articulated that having an increasing number of billionaires and
millionaires meant that India had arrived on the world stage , with little
realization that this is a game of snakes and ladders played out by
International finance and companiesin country after country in search of
cheaper labour and a comprador class ready to collaborate ; such gains can be
bubbles , unless there is a policy of all inclusive economic growth with basic
public services for all , within a political and constitutional framework
which reduces disparities ; what happend to the US economy can happen to any
other economy, in similar circumstances of corporate and financial rule.
Interestingly since the Commonwealth Games are to begin , the Squads , the
political instruments of divide and rule , are muted in their orchestration of
" Jehadi terrorism ". Yes the Indian elite will rue the propaganda on
terrorism , it will come to haunt us, as it has in the statement of the
Australian Prime Minister among others and many travel advisories which will
follow apart from the human and societal cost to the Indian nation as a whole
. Only occupied countries have terrorist alarms on the same scale as India .
Even the Separatists in the valley are suddenly quieter is it for the duration
of the Commonwealth Games ?????Now whom are they obliging ????????
This Petition needs endorsement .

Protect the Right to life with dignity of women who do not have
access to toilet
Created by Jan Jagruti on September 20, 2010, 6:39 pm in Civil and
Human Rights
Large ViewSanitation - a big problem in India, as half the
population of our country do not have access to this facility.
Mumbai is one of the biggest cities in the world and advanced in
terms of its commercialization. However, sanitation is one of the most common
issues neglected. Our team of women from Jan Jagruti went into the lanes of 3
areas Azad Mohala, Bharatiya Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar and spoke to women to
understand the severity of the sanitation issue prevailing. These areas have
severe problems with publichealth, due to improper sanitation infrastructure
and insufficiency of toilet facilities, compounded by numerous issues of
flooding during the monsoon season. Khaaddi, a local area/dumping ground, is
widely used by local residents for urination and defecation, leading to the
spread of contagious diseases. Though women use paid toilets, the issue of
cleanliness and waiting in long queues are the most common problem before them.
It is very insecure for them when they use open spaces for defecation.
Though it is the most basic responsibility of the government to
provide free lavatory facilities but it is not taken seriously by state. The
un-cleanliness of public toilets available is also need to concern because it
is also cause for infection and subsequent affects on women health. It is a
necessity and a matter of dignity that women need an easy access to toilet.
Women are mainly affected from this problem because several times they have to
face discrimination and disparity while using public toilets. Here in public
toilets of Mumbai, there is no urinal charge for men but it cost Rs.1 for
women. This poses a question on the fundamental right to equality for access to
facility which is different for men and women. The gynecological and urinary
tract problem run higher among who lack access to sanitation facilities. The
women who dont have access to toilets have to face many dilemmas and also feel
insecure while going open spaces.
After this survey, we came to know about certain severe problems of
women due to this lack of toilet facility. These major problems are pointed out
in brief here.
-Majority of women do not have lavatory provisions.
-Defecation in open spaces.
-Insecurity of women while going in open spaces.
-Health problem due to this unhygienic place used by them like
dumping ground.
-Disparity among men and women in use of public toilets.
-It has become a way of life and passing on to their generations -
making it a difficult cycle to break!
We need to understand that it is the violation of two fundamental
rights- RIGHT TO LIFE and RIGHT TO EQUALITY. Right to life means right to life
with dignity and are breached evidently in these cases.
Data Support:
-According to UNICEF report 12.2 crore houses do not have toilets in
their homes.
-Earlier reports of WHO said that out of 1.2 billion people who
defecate in the open 665 million are in India.
-India is major contributor for South Asia being the worst region in
the world in providing sanitation. About 2.5billion people in South Asia 64
percent of the population do not have clean sanitation facilities.
-It is worst record for any region in the world (Theres Dooley,
Senior Advisor at UNICEF water division in Newyork).
Demands:
-Each and every family should have a toilet as a basic facility
available for them. The number of public toilets should be increased up to a
level where every households would have a toilet.
-The toilets should be open free of cost to the people because it is
the matter of necessity and basic right and should not be a matter of business.
-The cleanliness of toilets should be maintained because it becomes a
source of infection to women and children. The cleaning activity should be
performed at 4 to 5 times a day.
-There should be a proper drainage system to avoid stagnation of
water and the diseases borne from this stagnated water.
-The basic right and necessities of people be should taken care by
the state as their primary agenda.

"After a war, the silencing of arms is not enough. Peace means respecting
all rights. You can’t respect one of them and violate the others. When a
society doesn’t respect the rights of its citizens, it undermines peace and
leads it back to war.”
