COMMITTEE FOR THE RELEASE OF POLITICAL PRISONERS

185/3, Fourth Floor, Zakir Nagar, New Delhi—25

  12/10/10

  PRESS RELEASE

Condemn the illegal detention of Punjabi Writer, Gurmeet Juj, and Harbans
Singh, Satish and Raju!

Condemn the fascist attitude of the Punjab CID and Central Government’s
Intelligence Bureau to stifle all democratic voices against Operation Green
Hunt!

  We demand their unconditional release!

The Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) strongly condemn
the act of impunity of the Punjab CID and the Central Government’s Intelligence
Bureau for illegally detaining Punjabi writer, Gurmeet Juj along with three
others—Harbans Singh, Satish and Raju. The illegal nature of the conduct of the
police is evident from the fact that the detention of the writer tantamounts to
plain kidnapping as nobody—none of his kith and kin—was informed about his
being taken for interrogation. Further there was no information about any FIR
or case filed on the person on the basis of which the detention was done. It
took the resolve of his wife to run from pillar to post to figure out the
whereabouts of her missing husband reminiscent to the days of the Punjab in the
80s and early 90s. Later she was told that her husband was detained for his
opinion against the murderous military campaign—called Operation Green Hunt—of
the Indian State against the poor tribals living in Central and Eastern India
who are fighting for their livelihoods. Gurmeet Juj, a people’s author has
always raised his voice against all forms of exploitation and violence and he
has been an uncompromising critic of State terrorism.

In a democratic country as India claims to be every citizen is free to hold
their political beliefs as well as express it without fear. This kind of
desperate acts with impunity only unmasks the bloody face of the Indian State
and its lawless and fascist police and intelligence agencies who have scant
regard for human rights let alone life.

We at the CRPP demand the immediate and unconditional release Gurmeet Juj and
all the other three activists mentioned above. We are concerned that they may
be tortured physically and mentally to extract any form of confession which can
later be used against them and for media trial by the police. We demand that
they be given access to lawyers. As per the court of law they should be
immediately produced before the court.

  In Solidarity,

  Gurusharan Singh

   President
