The suicides started from Andhra Pradesh from in or about
the early nineties when the new economic policy was ushered
in which withdrew subsidies for cottage and handloom industry
and thereafter spread to the rest of the country .

  Invite – Tuesday, 30th November 2010 @ 10.30am onwards

  Handloom Weavers Demand Government intervention to stop Weavers’ suicides;

To Hold Parliament March and Dharna in front of Parliament

  Friends,

On the 30th of November 2010, hundreds of representatives of Handloom Weavers
from across India will assemble at the Ramlila Maidan and March to the Indian
Parliament demanding serious Central government intervention to save the
handloom sector from complete devastation.

Today, due to the globalization policies and neo-liberal agenda of the
government that favours only corporations, handloom sector in India is facing a
complete enforced destruction. Weavers, like the peasants across the
agriculture sector, are also forced to end our lives.

We Demand that the UPA Government and the Parliament of India make immediate
intervention to protect weavers and the handloom secotr.

  Our Demands:

1.. Reverse the trend of declining real budgetary allocations immediately.
Handlooms deserve to get more than 25% as a proportion of textile sector
allocation (not the current 6%), as was the case in the late 1990s.
2.. Provide immediate price relief to handloom weavers through direct
policy intervention in Cotton as well as Silk Yarn. NHDC should stock yarn for
six months according to the specific requirements in each State in order to
buffer the weaver against fluctuations in yarn prices.
3.. Hank Yarn Obligation should be strictly implemented. Constitute Yarn
Advisory Board with representatives from Weavers’ Associations among others.
4.. Waive the handloom weavers’ loans with immediate effect. Also, waive
those loans taken by weavers in the name of BC, SC and ST minority Finance
corporations.
5.. Regularize the Silk Yarn imports from China with immediate effect. This
will improve the availability of Silk Yarn for weavers at affordable prices.
6.. Release Handloom Census conducted by Nielson and Co (2009-10)
immediately.
7.. Government should restore the Thrift Fund Scheme immediately to direct
benefit to the handloom weavers.
8.. Govt. should implement the work shed-cum Housing Scheme to the weavers
in the areas of urban and rural, each unit cost must be Rs.1,50,000/- as grant.

The parliament March will start from Ramlila Maidan towards Jantar Mantar at
10.30 am and the Dharna at Jantar mantar will be from 12 noon onwards.

Thanking you and expecting your presence and solidarity,

A lot of people are troubled by civil disobedience. As soon as you talk about
committing civil disobedience, they get a little upset. That’s exactly the
purpose of civil disobedience: to upset people, to trouble them, to disturb
them. We who commit civil disobedience are disturbed, too, and we mean to
disturb those who are in charge of the war... HOWARD ZINN
