KALYANI: More voices are rising in support of beleaguered Binayak Sen<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Binayak%20Sen>. While a groundswell of opinion has already been surging against his conviction in a sedition case, the Indian Medical Association<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Indian%20Medical%20Association> (IMA), Kalyani, too, has resolved to stand by the paediatrician. Taking a call at the general body meeting, IMA secretary S R Mondal said, "The association has decided to stand by Binayak for his selfless and exemplary service to the less privileged section of society." A resident of Kalyani, Binayak's father, D P Sen<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=D%20P%20Sen>, was a doctor in the Army. Member Ashok Bakshi said, "We will celebrate Binayak's birthday on January 4. His NRI brother Tapan Sen will also attend the programme." On the other hand, Kalyani Nagarik Suraksha Committee<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Kalyani%20Nagarik%20Suraksha%20Committee> will stage a protest on January 2, demanding Binayak's release<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Binayak's%20release>. The philanthropist's friend professor Asit Chakraborty, on behalf of the committee, said, "We will gather in Samata School near Central Park at 2 pm. Poet Joy Goswami will join us." Happy at the developments, Binayak's octogenarian mother was also overwhelmed at the support coming their way from renowned lawyer Ram Jethmalani <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Ram-Jethmalani>. "Jethmalani wants to fight my son's case. I am grateful to him... It proves that there are flaws in the verdict," said Anusua Sen, 84, adding that her daughter-in-law IIlena and other members of the family in Raipur would finally take a call on the issue. Battling her emotions, Illena, who was upset at the treatment being meted out to her husband in jail, said, "Jethmalani is familiar with the case and our family. I came to know on Wednesday morning that he has showed interest in fighting for Binayak. I will talk to him." Ruing the treatment to Binayak in jail, she added, "It is inhumane... He has been kept in a very bad condition. Jail authorities had previously told us that they would allow his brothers to meet him, but later they just allowed me and our two daughters. They also said that we could meet him just once in a fortnight." She even resented the fact that Binayak was allowed to step out of his cell only for six hours. "It may lead a man to madness," IIlena added. Echoing the fears of Binayak's friend in Kalyani, Illena said, "Binayak is a cardiac patient and he needs medicines regularly...
