All those surrendered (in the news item below) seem to be below 17. The story
seems to be the same again of being ideologically disillusioned and harassed by
top level people in the party, which in all likelihood can be a police story.
Or need not be. But given their age and the vulnerability that those who
surrender seem to face, there is a need to respond or visit Keonjhar district.
In yet another incident (Jan 2), five people, allegedly Maoist, have been
gunned down by Orissa police, four of whom are women - one being a 13 yr old.
Pramodini (PUCL) is trying to get more information for us.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 6 (IANS) Five women Maoists, including a local deputy
commander, surrendered Thursday in Orissa's Keonjhar district, police said. All
the rebels were below 17 years of age.
The guerrillas laid down their arms before the police in Keonjhar town, the
district head quarters of mineral rich Keonjhar district, some 230 kms from
here, Superintendent of Police A.K. Singh told IANS.
They were members of Kalinga Nagar division committee of the outlawed Communist
Party of India-Maoist (CPI-M) and active since 2008. They were involved in
several crimes, including two murders, attack on a police station and attack on
two liquor shops in the district, he said.
Disillusionment with the Maoist ideology and harassment by top rebel leaders
were the main reasons for their surrender, he said.
They surrendered with several weapons, including two pistols, one country made
gun, and few rounds of bullets, he said.
