Sub.: Profiling of Kashmiri Drivers in Mumbai Sir, It has recently been reported in the media that the Mumbai Police has issued an advisory to various police stations asking them to keep a watch on people from the state, especially drivers, as some of them are suspected to have been carrying out recce for terror groups. This we find extremely disturbing as it goes against the very grain of our constitutional rights and values ensuring equality of all citizens in the eyes of law. It goes without saying that the Mumbai Police must be fully alert to the dangers of terrorism, and also all other crimes, to ensure the safety of the common citizens and for that purpose keep unrelenting watch on all likely suspects. But targeting people from a specific region, or religion, is totally unacceptable as terrorists, or criminals, come in all sizes and shapes from all communities. Such advisory would surely go to stigmatise all the Kashmiris here and as a result they would face all sorts of harassments and worse. That would also in turn further aggravate their sense of alienation. Under the circumstances, the Committee for the Release of Dr. Binayak Sen, Mumbai and Kashmir solidarity group, Mumbai emphatically demands that the advisory be immediately withdrawn and an apology be issued to the Kashmiri community here. At the same time the Mumbai Police must keep all vigil and strengthen its intelligence gathering machinery to foil any terrorist attack from whatever quarters.
