Dear Ghulam Muhammed,

Thanks for posting this. It was clear even at the time of the arrests that
there
was not enough proof and that these men were picked up randomly.  As of today
none of the investigations and arrests of so-called terror suspects inspire
confidence. There is an urgent need for an impartial investigation into the
functioning of these agencies in  order to get an idea of the extent to which
muslim youth hase been victimized.

Below is a post I sent to another list:

[ I am aware of only one instance where a muslim youth wrongly detained by the
state has received an apology and compensation.

Ironically, though the youth concerned is an Indian, the  state which did the
decent thing by saying sorry is Austarlia. Dr. Haneef should thank his stars
that he was not picked up by the Indian police.

This wikipedia link has a good summary of evidence against him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhamed_Haneef#The_one-way_ticket

Shamefully Indian courts have convicted several accused (mostly muslims) based
on evidence that was far more questionable than this. The trial of muslims
accused of triggering blasts in Mumbai in 1993 result in a conviction rate of
nearly %90 ! This fact alone should raise doubts in our minds as to how fair
the

trial was.

Meanwhile the Indian police and various other units with fancy names like SIT,
ATS, and NIA etc continue to harrass muslim youth by illegally detaining them
for prolonged and indefinate periods and using tourure against them.

In my view, the case that stands out is the detaintion of a air passenger in
Mumbai by the police for interrogation. In a first, he was released after only
a few days. Not clear if he was tortured or mistreated. His crime apart from
being a muslim? His name is Dr. Shahanawz -- same name as that of the alleged
suspect of the day for the blast in Varanasi.

Implement PCA To Stop Harassment Of Muslim Youth
By Syed Ali Mujtaba

Now the ball is in the court of the Civil Society i.e. the Non Governmental
Organization (NGOs). It is high time that Muslim organizations along with
friendly NGOs may take up the issue of implementing the Supreme Court directive
of constituting the Police Complaints Authority (PAC) in each state of India.
This task may have to be taken up with utmost urgency, only then the
highhandedness and lethargic attitude of the police forces could be checked.
