 whistleblower Niyamat
Ansari<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Niyamat%20Ansari>,
who was beaten to death allegedly by "well connected" contractors, continue
to receive threats despite named FIR being registered with Latehar police.

The police have arrested one Arun
Singh<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Arun-Singh> of
eight people, including alleged Maoist area commander Sudarshan, named in
the FIR.

Latehar SP Kuldeep Dwivedi said the police are acting in the right direction
to arrest all the accused. "Some have been detained and questioned to
establish links with the case and soon they would be brought under book," he
said.

While Bhukhan Singh, friend and associate of Ansari, has been provided
police protection, another associate Mahavir Parahiya and family members are
being regularly threatened with dire consequences.

Development economist and visiting faculty at
Delhi<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Delhi> School
of Economics Reetika Khera who visited Ansari's family and his village on
Saturday told TOI that the family was traumatised after the Niyamat's
killing. "The family has been rendered hand-to-mouth because he was the sole
bread-earner and three families were dependant on him," she said.

Ansari, a resident of Jerua village under Kope gram panchayat of Manika
block, lived in a joint family with old parents, one elder brother and his
family, including one physically challenged child, a divorced sister with
her daughter, his wife and three children.

MGNREGA Sahayata Kendra member Ansari and his close friend Bhukhan Singh
recently exposed major funds embezzlement in the MGNREGA worth Rs 2.5 lakh
by former Manika BDO Kailash Sahu and Rankikalan panchayat sevak Basudev
Nagesia in conspiracy with local contractors leading to lodging of an FIR
against the BDO and panchayat sevak.

Earlier, he helped labourers file work applications. "From 2007 to February
2009, the sahayata kendra supported demand for unemployment allowance for
several workers in Kope panchayat as a result of which during Latehar Lok
Adalat in February 2009, more than 90 workers were paid unemployment
allowance for the first time in Jharkhand," said Jean Drez', renowned
MGNREGA activist and National Advisory Council member.

In October 2008, Ansari and his friend Singh were attacked and soon after
the Lok Adalat, false cases were slapped against both of them. "In November
2010, their homes were locked up and other residents of the village were
warned against helping them," said Gopi, a member of Gram Swaraj Abhiyan,
which is pivotal in the MGNREGA implementation.

On March 2, goons abducted Niyamat from his residence in Jerua village. He
was brutally beaten for nearly one hour. According to eyewitnesses, this was
done by the same gang that attacked the duo in October 2008.

He was taken to Sadar hospital with injuries where Ansari died. The
following day, his widowed sister lodged an FIR in Latehar police station,
naming alleged Maoist commander Sudarshan, Shankar Dubey, Vijay Dubey,
Purushottam Prashad, Arun Singh, Vashisht Tiwari, Prem Chand Singh and Devas
Singh.
