It is subscribed none other than the United Nation Organization (UNO) on 28th July, 2010 which has accepted ‘clean and safe drinking water and sanitation’ as a Human Right. The august Supreme Court of the country keeping the Constitution in mind has also accepted water as the Fundamental Right under right to Life. In spite of these acceptances the poor, women and children of slums and shanties of Mumbai are still struggling to avail water for their basic consumption. It is because; Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is following the discriminatory policy of the state government which has negated water to post 1st Jan, 1995 poor slum dwellers by invoking is as cut-off-date period. Is the logic behind the decision right? In fact it is highly unbecoming of a democratic polity which we never hesitate to proclaim hoarsely. However, even pre-1995 slum dwellers are also not getting water. It means water as fundamental right is being clearly invalidated for the poor inhabitants of Mumbai. It is estimated that about 25 to 30 lakh poor people have denied water due to cut off date policy. Often, they have to skip their daily chores in order to get water. They are being made victims of the collusion of the water mafia comprising of political workers, local water lords and BMC officials. They have to bear the cost of water Rs 700 to Rs. 1200 for each house per month. Many times they have to consume contaminated water which causes water-borne diseases and other related health problems. Historically, Savitrimai Phule and Mahatma Jotiba Phule opened the well in their house for the use of untouchables and Dr. Ambedkar did Mahad Satyagraha on 20 March 1927 against cast based discrimination for establishing right to water in. But unfortunately our present governments are doing just contrary to that by denying water to people. In order to bring to the attention of the power-that-be, Paani Haq Samiti a Mumbai based network, fighting for the right to water, is organizing a demonstration ‘Chalo Mantralaya’ on 22nd March at Azad Maidan at 1.P.M. on internationally declared World Water Day. Please join us with full strength so that Rights and Dignity of the people could be insulated from violations. Our demands are:- 1. To remove the criteria of cut-off date to get the water supply connections. 2. To remove the discrimination in the supply of water between rich and poor. 3. Take immediate action against local goons and water mafias selling water illegally.
