Rizwan case hearing

25 March 2011

KOLKATA, 25 MARCH: Apprehension of an “unnatural incident” being
engineered by Ashok Todi, was expressed by Rizwanur Rehman and
Priyanka Todi, in a joint statement to police, said Mr Amit
Chattopadhyay, judge, ninth fast track court, today.
Mr Sanatan Mukherjee, submitting for Pradip Todi, an accused for
allegedly abetting Rizwanur, said the statement neither mentions
Pradip's name nor can the term “unnatural incident” necessarily
suggest suicide. Though the joint statement had express apprehension
of abduction by Ashok Todi's henchmen, no such thing had actually
occurred, it was submitted. Pradip Todi cannot be held to be
responsible for his brother's perceived acts as this is a criminal
case and has no room for presumption, it was further submitted.
Rizwanur had told Priyanka, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi,
about his former relationship with Pompi Roy, submitted Mr Mukherjee.
Hence, Ms Roy's interaction with Priyanka, could not have abetted the
suicide, it was submitted.
On 19 September, 2007 Rizwanur had written of taking legal action
against his in-laws, if his wife does not return, it was submitted.
However, what exactly had led him to commit suicide on 21 September,
is unclear. The matter will come up for hearing on 1 April. sns

You cannot build anything on the foundations of caste. You cannot
build up a nation, you cannot build up a morality. Anything that you
will build on the foundations of caste will crack and will never be a
whole.
