Title : A DOCTOR TO DEFEND : the Binayak Sen story

Country : India
Year : 2011
Duration : 47 mins.

The flm screening will be followed by Q and A

The film is an interweaving of the journey of Binayak Sen from the
influences that shaped the path he was to take later, whether it was the
Christian Medical College where he studied or the trade union workers’
hospital where he worked at Dalli Rajhara or the Rupantar trust that he and
his wife set up to help villagers---to the choices that seem almost
inevitable. The decision to investigate and speak up against excesses going
on in/by the state, knowing the outcome.

As the film cuts back and forth in time, between various highpoints in
Binayak’s life, with key players and primarily Binayak himself talking about
his work and decisions, a portrait emerges :

This is a man who cannot turn his face away from things that affect other
people. He cannot just go ahead and live his own life, uncaring of what
happens to the large section of society that is deprived or denied justice.

As Binayak explains in greater detail the two-India theory, where the
section that is rich, that is responsible for the 8 percent growth, the
malls, the prosperity vis-à-vis the deprivation and struggle that the rest
of India faces, he warns that people are not going to tolerate being pushed
aside to suffer while others prosper. He urges people to come forward in a
nation-wide plea for equity and peace and justice.

Accompanied by rare footage of Salwa Judum camps at a time (July 2009) when
it was still possible to sneak inside and clandestinely shoot, Binayak
traces the genesis of the Salwa Judum ( a vigilante state-sponsored,
movement to deal with the Naxalite problem in affected areas of
Chhattisgarh) and says that violence is no solution. Dialogue is the only
way out.

The trial, the case against Binayak, the jail period, the immense support in
the Free Binayak Sen campaign, the trauma his family underwent and continues
to face, the price all of them paid for a choice that Binayak says he would
still have made, were he to be asked to make it again….these are all
important issues dealt with in the film which is non-linear in style and
devoid of any voice-over.

The film is a record, a testimony of what can happen to a ‘prisoner of
conscience’ when he decides to follow that conscience all the way.

And in view of the fact that Binayak Sen is currently in jail on a life
sentence, with his bail petition having been rejected in the state High
Court, his views on the current political situation in his state, ( with the
exception of the legal case) and his thought processes are of vital interest
to people worldwide.

Binayak Sen’s interviews are all exclusive, so is the footage of him
re-visiting his past, quite literally, his roots with the doctors and
workers of Shahid hospital at Dalli Rajhara in Chhattisgarh, and his
interaction with his family.

The film is of archival value to human rights activists and to all people
with a conscience worldwide as it profiles the life and views of a ‘prisoner
of conscience’ whose voice is now silenced.
