Dear Chandni,

Hi. I have finally gotten down to writing about the programs we intend for
which we need volunteers.

Aawaaz-e-Niswaan: Aawaaz-e-Niswan is a feminist organisation working in the
city of Mumbai since 1985. We started out as an informal space for women to
meet and share their experiences and gradually grew into an organization
working on issues of violence, education, advocacy with a feminist rights
based approach.

In 2003, we started working in Mumbra. Mumbra inspite of being a suburb of
Bombay and its proximity to Thane lacks a number of basic services and is a
much maligned muslim ghetto. Here we set up the Rehnuma Centre, the first
progressive space for girls and women. Since then we have been conducting
activities such as basic literacy, english speaking, courses which build
confidence in the girls to consider financial independence, creative
writing, theatre and other ways to express our politics and thoughts.

Since the last two years we have with the help of friends been able to stage
two plays and monologues. This avenue has found much favour among girls who
are otherwise not allowed to be seen in public. We are looking for people
who can help us train ten of the library members (all girls in the age of
17-20 who want to develop their skill in theatre). The girls currently have
exams on and will be able to give time from mid October for these sessions.
They are also willing to travel outside of Mumbra for the training.

The other activity that girls are very keen on is painting / cartooning /
photography / film making, the works :)

We are also keen on conducting film screenings at both our centres,
especially Kurla because we have space and its more accessible.

We also need volunteers who can teach english/ help us design a curriculum
for english teaching / help us with our website/ conduct creative writing/
poetry workshops.

These activities are required at both the centres but since Mumbra is
inaccessible and while it is easier to find volunteers to visit Kurla it
would be really helpful if we can get volunteers for Mumbra as well.

Since all our work is political, we consider writing, painting or theatre to
be a means of conveying our politics and would like to work with volunteers
who will participate in the process of political engagement and perspective
building of the girls while imparting skills.

I hope this writeup helps. Please circulate it if it helps us get volunteers
for the activities mentioned.

Warmest
sabah
