No talks with Kalam on Koodankulam: PMANE

TIRUNELVELI: People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S
P Udhayakumar on Saturday expressed reservations on engaging in talks with
former President of India Dr A P J Abdul on the Koodankulam Nuclear Power
Project (KKNPP).
“Regarding the Koodankulam plant, we would not speak with Kalam,”
Udhayakumar said during a demonstration staged by the movement in the city.
On Kalam’s plan to meet the protestors on Sunday, Udhayakumar said they
would heartily welcome him as the former president, a senior citizen, and a
Tamil. “But in connection with the Koodankulam plant, we would not speak
with him,” he stated.
Thiruvalluvar Kazhagam president Professor Arivarasan led the protest, held
near the Palayamkottai bus stand. In support of the people on relay fast at
Idinthakarai, the protestors raised slogans against the KKNPP.
Participating in the agitation, Palayamkottai RC Diocese Bishop A Jude
Paulraj stated that it was not a Christian struggle but one to safeguard
the society. “It should not be looked at from a religious angle. All
sections od people are participating in the protest,” he said.
Speaking to reporters, Udhayakumar said a protest demonstration would be
staged in Villupuram district on November 8. The next day, a similar
protest would be held at Puducherry.
Quoting the KKNPP officials who said the spent fuel would be reprocessed
and used in the units, Udhayakumar sought to know if any plant for
reprocessing fuel was functioning on the KKNPP premises.
“Recycling the spent fuel is 1,000 times dangerous than a nuclear reactor,”
he added.
Adithamilar Peravai leader Adiyaman and functionaries of the BJP, PMK, CPI
(ML), MMK participated.
