Towards New Dawn strongly condemns the illegal arrest, lathi-charge and harassment of peaceful protesters of the anti slum demolition on Nonadanga in Kolkata in the last few days. While mounting attack on the democratic rights of the most underprivileged section of the people, TMC and Congress alliance government of West Bengal yesterday (8th March 2012) arrested more than seventy people when they were in a peaceful protest against the demolition of their slums. Among the arrested are several minors, editor of the Towards New Dawn ABHIJNAN SARKAR, right activist DEBLINA CHAKRABORTY, DEVJANI GHOSH, Dr. PARTHASAROTHI ROY, SOMIK CHAKRABORTY, MANAS CHATTERJEE and several other displaced, evicted people.
The people at Nonadanga are protesting as the TMC government while breaking their pre-poll promise of not demolishing of any slum; on 30th April, 2012 demolished and set fire more than 200 houses in the wee hours of day and made thousands homeless. Incidentally majority of these displaced people are living here for more than 25 years now and many of them came in the place losing everything in devastating Hurricane Aila at Sundarban. The brutal police action; which is a stark reminder of assault on the evicted people of Singur by Mamta Banerjee’s predecessor Budhadeb Bhatyacharya, proved once again, irrespective of the their political orientation, parliamentary parties of the state are failed to come up with the peoples’ aspiration and more likely to work on behest of their corporate masters ( land in Nonadanga are target of many big real estate houses, as it is one of the prime location of growing city). This latest incident is another addition on the list of increasing attacks on any dissent and critical voices of people and fascist tendency of the TMC and Congress alliance. Towards New dawn, while extending its solidarity to the struggling mass of Nonadanga slum, condemns double standards on the part of the government and demands immediate unconditional release of all protesters, withdrawl of spurious cases lodged against editor Abhijnan Sarkar and Others and stop any kind of eviction of poor people in the name of development. We also urge all democratic like minded people and organizations to raise their voices against this anti-democratic high-handed police action and mounting attack on peoples’ right in West Bengal.
