*From the Editor’s Desk*
The incessant attack on Gaza leading to the death of 1700 odd, including
many children is a matter of grave concern. We have witnessed helplessly
the whole inhuman act by Israel. US has been supplying arms to Israel
during this period. Shame! In India many human rights groups have already
protested and on 9th August there will be protests all over. One hopes
apart from peace protests an International mechanism needs to be developed
which can bring a stop to such crimes as done by Israel. The pretext of
Hamas attacks, shelling, though true are no justification for killing so
many innocents. There is a tendency, more so with present Government to
equate Israel, the attacker, with Palestine, the victim. Way back Gandhi,
in his article in Harijan, pointed out that the whole argument ‘homeland
for chosen people’ is unjustified. We are carrying Ganhi’s article for
historical interest. Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand are amongst the
bravest fighters against the onslaught of communal politics. The Gujarat
Government is trying to stifle their voice and activities by putting false
cases of financial embezzlement on them. This reflects the state of
morality of our polity. One hopes that the Courts do justice and exonerate
these human rights defenders form the baseless charges. We are carrying a
chronology of the case against them. This 25th August, it will be six years
that the anti Christian violence was engineered. The National Solidarity
Forum has given a national call to observe this day as Kandhamal Day.
Programs are being organized in major cities all over the country to call
for justice for Kandhamal victims, and to plan for social initiatives which
will ensure that such violence against weaker sections does not take place.
