All India Secular Forum and CSSS have taken an inititive to promote the
peace activities at local level. Two events which took place this month,
one at Saharanpur and one at Varanais may set the trend for more local
activists to start the local campaigns and awareness programs in their
areas. Similarly Center for Harmony and Peace and STEP organized two day
training for trainers program for building bridges across communities. We
hope more such activities will begin and promote the cause of communal
amity and national integration.
The issue of Love Jihad did dominate the social space. We are carrying a
major interview by Charu Gupta, who points out that to conceptualize Love
Jihad, the way it is being propagated by ‘RSS combine’ presumes that
girls-women are fools. We also carry a report of the group called Love
Commandos, whose goal is to help the couples in love. Such a step is very
meaninglful at present as the sectarian communal forces are out to target
the Muslim youth and restrict the freedom of Hindu girls. A face book
posting by Kavita Krishnan announces the convention of Youth to oppose the
Love Jihad propaganda and to assert the right to choose one’s own partner
by boys as well as girls.
An important article by Abdul Khalique, the Secretary of Lok Janshakti
Party, which is opportunistically allying with BJP, tells us as to how a
stifling atmosphere against Muslims is being intensified by the Modi
Sarkar. The parties quietly allying with Modi cannot escape the blame of
this. Moderate utterances of Modi and promotion of communal attacks by Modi
affiliates in VHP, Bajrang Dal and many other outfits which have sprung up
is a clear attack on freedom of religion.
In a major inititive *Communalism Combat *and www.hillele.org have launched
a video interview of Hansal Mehta which is part of a series of audio-visual
interviews, available for viewing on the internet on the joint You Tube
video channel. This video exposes the politics of sectarianism.
