The results of Assembly elections of five states (June 2016) are
significant for two reasons. One that BJP along with its allies came to
power in Assam for the first time. Second that nationally speaking an image
has been tried to be created as if BJP is on ascendence and Congress is on
decline. The analysis of voting percentage and the total number of seats
won in these five state shows a different interpretation. The BJP’s vote
share has mostly declined compared to its performance in 2014 Lok Sabha
elections. Also that Congress has done reasonably well overall maintating
its voteshare even in Assam where it lost the power. The BJP has been
beneficiary as it did clever elatoral alliances while Congressfailed to do
so in Assam in particular. In West Bengal Congress did better, is that at
the cost of CPM, which did loose out badly will have to be seen. One
interpretation is obvius that democratic alliances, the give and take among
the non BJP political formations is the key to keeping the communal forces
out of the seats of power.
On the back of BJP slogan of Congress Mukt Bharat (India Free from
Congress), comes the slogan from BJP affiliate VHP’s leader Sadvi Prachi.
She state that now they will work for Muslim Free India. In reference to
Asaduddin Owaisi’s refusal to chant ‘Bharat ki jai’, Baba Ramdev, the
fellow traveler of RSS had also said that lakhs of people would have been
beheaded had Constitution not been there. The repercussions of the
statement of the fellow traveler of RSS combine are fraught with dangers.
One wonders why statements like these are not challenged in the courts of
law. These statements are divisive and should come under “Hate Speech” and
treated accordingly.
