*About the Performance: *

'Hum Khawateen' is a reading of six excerpts from Kalame Niswan, an
anthology of Muslim women's writings from Urdu magazines for women
published from Delhi, Lahore and Aligarh between 1905 and 1956. Featuring
political and social concerns of Muslim women at the time, these
magazines highlighted
and debated issues such as women's education, the Indian Independence
movement, and gender relations, among others. They publicised radical
positions on issues which remain contentious even today, like polygamy and
the purdah.

Copies of Kalame Niswan will be available for sale at the venue.
