*Dear All,* Prof. Sukhdeo Thorat Former Chairperson of the UGC and Indian Council of Social Science Research will be delivering 9th Dr.Asghar Ali Engineer Memorial lecture on the subject “*Why Untouchability, Caste Discrimination and Atrocities still persists despite Law? Reflections on Causes for Persistence and Solutions*”. The lecture will be held in Durbar Hall of The Asiatic Society of Mumbai, Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Fort, Mumbai, at 4.30 p.m. on 5th August 2017. The lecture would throw light on relevance of “*Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989*” and its role in reducing untouchability, discrimination and injustices against Dalits. The lecture will also examine whether the said Act needs to be diluted as per the demand of a section of Maratha Community Prof. Sukhdeo Thorat will also discuss Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s position on causes of untouchability and its remedies. Prof. Thorat will also examine the role of the state in combating atrocities, discrimination and injustices against Dalits. The role of the state goes beyond legal measures of punishing atrocities against Dalit. The Memorial Lecture will be presided by Honourable Shri.
