*Public Hearing on Aadhaar* *30 June 2018*
*4pm-7pm* *National College Conference Hall , Linking Road, Bandra, Mumbai* Featuring a panel comprising… · Justice Hosbet Suresh (formerly of the Bombay High Court) · Professor R Ramakumar, (School of Development Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences) · Sucheta Dalal (Journalist & Author; Trustee, Moneylife Foundation) · Bapoo M Malcom, (Advocate, Bombay High Court) The Aadhaar scheme has been in existence since 2009, but was governed by an Act of Parliament only since 2016, with the Act itself facing judicial scrutiny. The Supreme Court has finally heard a batch of Aadhaar-related petitions dating as far back as 2012, challenging the very Constitutionality of Aadhaar as well as the legitimacy of the Money Bill route through which the scheme became law, among other issues. Even as we wait for the Supreme Court’s judgment on Aadhaar, we continue to confront on a daily basis the growing number of exclusions faced by ordinary citizens in tandem with the government continuing to widen the Aadhaar net to not just more welfare and subsidy schemes, but also allowing Aadhaar linking with more private services. Meanwhile, the government as well the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) continue to deny that any exclusions are happening, while touting false claims about savings due to Aadhaar linking. June 30 is a date of immediate concern given that it is currently still the deadline for ensuring Aadhaar linkage with all welfare schemes for which an individual is eligible. It is also still the deadline for linking Aadhaar with PAN. While we hope that these deadlines will be extended to the same limit as other Aadhaar linking deadlines (e.g. for bank accounts and mobile services) until the Supreme Court judgment is announced, we continue to push to make public distress over Aadhaar more visible to those in power – and less easy to ignore or dismiss. On June 30, join a number of concerned citizens and activists from various organizations and listen to first-hand accounts from people denied their rights and entitlements, either due to not possessing or not linking an Aadhaar. This public hearing will be interspersed with protest poetry “inspired” by Aadhaar, and with protest music performances by Lokshair Sambhaji Bhagat, Neeraj Arya and friends from Kabir Café, and many others. #BreakAadhaarChains is supported by….
