Hello, all, I sent this message as an edited reply on the group website some time back. Neither my husband nor I ever received it as a list post in our email. So, here it is again. It was quite a find as far as the provenance of my dear little ruin (which is very nearly playable, now) is concerned. I need to re-find the site which referred to an early 19th c hurdy being built "in the Bassot style". Now, the head on my hg is not nearly as worn down as this one below, but it was definitely carved by the same person, not fancy or pretty, but with character. ;^)
I did a lot of searching when we first obtained M. Bassot, but the page below hadn't come on line, yet. Merry Christmas, Happy Channukah, Happy New Year, Barbara --- Hi, everybody, I just found a site that has a relative of my Bassot hg (which I call Monsieur Bassot)! After puzzling over mine a good long time, Craig is working very hard making it playable. He says I'll have it to play by Christmas, though not completely finished. We'll do the French polishing in the Spring. It has some very interesting problems. M. Bassot has another brother in a museum in Boston that has a Louvet repair tag in it. http://tinyurl.com/6nwlmf This is the full address I made into the tiny url above: http://www.culture.gouv.fr/public/mistral/joconde_fr?ACTION=RETROUVER... [the link was truncated in the cut and paste, the tiny url works] They say Bassot carved the rustic head himself. Well, that explains it ;^). I like it. This one appears to have been played to death, much as was mine. Maybe I'll get to bring my hg to Over the Water next Fall.
