February, 2009

The first newsletter of 2009 is worth waiting for, and with good reason:   the team have been working on creating the best festival.  Whilst finalising the programme for the 34th festival, here is some exciting news and details of the new site . . .

Logo

The festival has acquired a logo this year, and it is the official signature of the festival.

Associate Artist
After Gilles Chabenat (hurdy gurdy), Thierry Bertrand (bagpipes - veuze) and Jean-François Vrod (violin), we have the pleasure of announcing that the artist linked to this 34th festival will be Marc Perrone, self-taught player and composer of the diatonic accordion.
Last year, on the stage of the “Maîtres Sonneurs”, we had the honour and the surprise of hearing Marc Peronne performing “The Waltz of Europe”, composed for the European cultural season of 2008.
For this 34th festival, he will offer an exceptional opening concert with his fellow musicians, lead animated workshops during the festival and close the festival with the "Big Band of Accordions ".

What is going to become of the "alternative festival"?
The Chateau d’Ars is not located at the heart of a village, so the life of the village and its spontaneous animations must be revived in the different areas devoted to music and dance within the heart of the chateau.  It is very obvious that without the village, the "alternative festival" will no longer be what it was.   We all therefore have to adapt to this new place.
Nevertheless, it is not a matter for the George Sand Committee to abandon the creativity and artistic proliferation which has existed in the “OFF” or to deprive the festival-goers of it.
The “Clairiere” will be the place which will allow musicians and dancers to continue playing and dancing through to the early hours, after the organised bals.  The entrance fee will be similar to that of a traditional bal.
You should not forget that the “OFF” was never organized, it was created by the festival-goers and became what the festival-goers made it.  It will therefore be the same on this new site.
We ask each festival-goer to come the festival park of Chateau d’Ars, and make it your own.

Practical Information
Festival Opening :  Friday 10th July from 8 pm
The festival will start with an opening concert: “carte blanche by Mark Perrone”.

The opening of the park and the instrument makers area:  Saturday 11th July from 12 noon. An animation except the park will be foreseen on Saturdays mornings.
Closure of the festival :  Tuesday 14th July, approximately 8 pm.

The access to the festival campsite will be reserved for the festival-goers having bought a ticket of entrance from the festival.

The different areas within the Château grounds:
The “Salon de Lutherie” with 130 instrument makers, the associations, the CD stand, the Trad Magazine stand and the team from Folker magazine (Germany).
The “Clairière”, the space devoted to dancing …
The “Cour du Château”, the space devoted to concerts.
The “Pommeraie”, the space for solo concerts, the “open stage” and dance floors for free playing.
The “Prairie”, thespace for services (food, refreshments).

Important – Ticket Information
The new site offers three places for concerts. However, the “Cour du Chateau” has a maximum capacity of 900 places, therefore, festival-goers who buy a 4-day ticket will be given priority to the concerts.  Depending on the number of tickets which are sold, there may be tickets on sale at the festival ticket office, on the same day as the concerts.
The tickets for the opening concert with Marc Perrone, which will take place in the «  Cour de Château  », will be sold separately up to the limit of available places.
The ticket office will open on April 2009.

Animations
As with each year, the 2009 festival will offer various animations: dance workshops in the morning, competitions, meetings of musicians, presentations of instruments by the instrument makers and some new items.  Further to the success of last year, the “apérosol” will take place again and is currently in preparation.
If you would like to receive the festival brochure announcing the programme and rates for 2009, please send your postal address to [email protected]

The whole festival will take place within the park of the Chateau d’Ars, located near the Village of Lourouer Saint-Laurent, 8kms from Saint-Chartier, in the direction of La Châtre.
