I like the Shure for a good basic onstage mic. I put the end of it relatively close to the wheel cover to really pick up the sounds of the strings on the wheel. I prefer the SM-58 over the 57 because it's brighter and seems to pick up a bit better, but don't know that you really need to drop another 100 bucks on a different mic as the 57 is pretty good. I imagine others will differ with me on this, but I'm not particularly a fan of electronic pickups on a gurdy or any other acoustic instrument -- the mic sound to me is much richer and truer. But your mileage may vary. Mitch G. Guerneville, California, US [email protected] writes:
I apologize in advance for bringing this up, because I know it's been discussed before, and my only excuse for not paying attention is that I've long played in bands which regarded amplification as a sort of disease not discussed in polite company. Now, however, I'm finding economic advantage in playing for dances. For my viol, a Shure Beta 57a (the old workhorse) works beautifully, but I haven't had the opportunity to try it with my vielle. Has anyone tried this mike for this purpose, or perhaps has another instrument mike they could recommend that might be suitable for viol and vielle? - Martin **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.
