I encourage everyone to try the Nylgut strings, but I'll also include this caveat. We were once gut string suppliers for lutenists, and we had access to pretty much every type of string known to man or woman. We tried them all on hurdy-gurdy, and although we hoped that each one we tried would be The One, The Holy Grail of Strings, the Perfect String For Us, we came to back to gut. Nothing sounds quite like it.
Your mileage may vary, as the EPA says, and perhaps Nylgut is The One for you. Certainly the cost can't be any worse. ;-( As for what gauge to use, the beauty of Nylgut is that its density is the same as gut, so the gauge (diameter) is the same as well. Whatever size of gut string you are using, try the closest diameter to it in Nylgut. I haven't kept track of where to get Nylgut in the States. When we were getting them, we ordered directly from Aquila in Italy. Boston Catlines may carry them. Happy restringing! Alden > Yes, but what gauge?
