While it's true the left thumb doesn't play a part in playing the HG, it's probably going to get stressed when you're adjusting the tangents. They have to be set pretty tight in the keys to function properly. You could, perhaps, circumvent this by cutting an extra, smaller notch in a tourne-à-gauche specifically for the tangents, though....
