No hopes dashed here; I think I'm safe.

It's the hyper-extension of the left thumb that causes my problems on
the guitar. Lateral pressure -- which I think is what you describe --
I can handle.

I guess I just wasn't meant to have opposable thumbs (my wife has
always said that I am 'sub-primate' and I guess she's right!  : ^ )
