The email has completely disappeared from my computer but I read that someone
had a sticky dog.

If the dog is sticking (unless you spilled maple syrup on your soundboard) it
sounds like the tail end of the dog needs to be shaved down or that you have
debris in the slot on the bridge for the tail. I suggest that you pull out the
dog and clean out the bridge slot then recheck the fit of the dog. If it sticks
or rubs in the slightest you should cut down the thickness of the tail ever so
slightly. check it again and see if it moves freely. If it does then the
problem is solved. The tail end of my dog is really loose in the slot and it
performs perfectly.
If you suspect that the foot of the dog is actually sticky, try putting some
fine sand paper (600 grit) under the foot, push gently on the top of the dog
while pulling the sand paper out from under it. That should remove any sticky
stuff stuck to it.

Lastly, and I don't want to sound like I'm being rude rather than realistic
about this, if you are playing shorter coups with a sticky dog then you are
really not doing yourself any favors. You should be able to play a coup exactly
the length you want in any position on the wheel and using proper coup
techniques. If you use an instrument that is performing poorly you risk
learning and practicing really bad habits. I stuggle with doing things right
every day and work on getting better all the time and I would hate to see you
have to relearn after a bad habit forms.
