Ah, the joys of self-promotion...but seriously...check my tunebooks listed
at the bottom of the Mitch Gordon Music page on my website
(_www.frenchtradmusic.com_ (http://www.frenchtradmusic.com) ). The new "Dances
With Wolves"
booklet has both Branle des Chevaux and Bourree de Concours (as well as
the recently discussed Belle Endormie), and a number of other dark minor and
modal tunes that are well suited to gurdy. The Terre d'Auvergne booklet
tends more towards major tunes, but provides a good range of French trad
repertoire that's suitable to sessions and dances. Between the two booklets
you'd have gurdy repertoire to work on for quite awhile.

There's not much gurdy in trad French Canadian music, but that hasn't
stopped several francophone gurdy-addicted players in eastern Canada! If you
can get to the Chants de Vielle festival this fall, do so, and you might want
to connect up with some players in Quebec and Ontario, especially Nicolas
Boulerice of Le Vent du Nord. Just a thought. Also, since you're in
Alberta, perhaps you're not too far away from Derek Lofthouse on this list?

Thanks for the reply good people,

My name is Ian Porteous and I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

I work full time touring in schools sharing Canadian History and French
Canadian culture using songs, stories and dances.
_www.lesbucherons.com_ (http://www.lesbucherons.com/)

I play seriously Bluegrass Banjo _
www.lesbucherons.com/en/shows/ian-porteous-stringband/_
(http://www.lesbucherons.com/en/shows/ian-porteous-stringband/)

 (http://www.lesbucherons.com/en/shows/ian-porteous-stringband/) I've also
learned how to play the rhythm bones and am passionate about the Native
American Flute

I have just ordered an Aquitane from _www.altarwind.com_
(http://www.altarwind.com/) with preamp pick up, 3 drone capos and
sympathetic strings.

I hope it's a good one to start with,

I did download "tunes from a strangeland" from Mellisa the Loud, using CD
Baby, really nice sounding HG Music.

Does somebody have the sheet music to Bransle des
Cheveaux (Horses's Bransle) and Bourree de Concours?

Anyway, I appreciate all the information and hopefully someday I meet some
you in person.

Thanks,

Ian

Welcome, Ian.

That's a fine Scots name! Are you still in Scotland, or are you an
ex-pat? As Scott says, you need to tell us where you are so we can
help you best, as well as all the other details.

I just posted a basic library of methods and maintenance that all HG
players should own - that's one starting point.

Standard repetoire is more difficult - depends on your tastes. I would
suggest going to _www.overthewater.org_ (http://www.overthewater.org/)
and looking at the music
selection there, particularly the Beginner's Class (Scott would be too
modest to suggest that, he chose and taught it, and very well too!)

Bransles and Bourees are what people play mostly - Bransle des
Cheveaux (Horses's Bransle) and Bourree de Concours are standards that
everyone knows.

You can find CDs on Mitch Gordon.s site, _www.frenchtradmusic.com_
(http://www.frenchtradmusic.com/) , and
by searching on iTunes, eMusic and CDBaby. Learning some artist names
will help with your search.

The UK-based yahoo group will give you lots of information about local
events - Youlgrave and Ramsgate come to mind (you should join that
group anyway, it's another excellent resource). Over The Water is the
big gathering in the US on the West Coast in the Fall.

_www.gurdypedia.com_ (http://www.gurdypedia.com/) is a good web-based
resource - it will give you
lots of information and links to other sites, and you can keep
searching from there.

That should get you started, and please tell us where you are and what
you bought!
