Roz has a toy stuffed monkey that she takes along when we play at a farmers
market or on the street, and leaves it in the instrument case where people
put tips. Tends to pre-empt that question. Although one 2 or 3 year old
girl tried to grab it and run off with it once.

[That gave me a mental image of a monkey trained to play a hurdy-gurdy.]

We probably need to have some ready answers to the "Where's your monkey?"
question:

"I couldn't afford both."

"I couldn't get him potty-trained, so I had to let him go."

"He ran off and joined the circus."

"He’s in California auditioning for 'Dancing with the Stars.'"

[Maybe those last two are the same.]

"He would only dance to one tune."

"He's on strike for equal billing, plus room and board isn't good enough
for him."

"He got tired of being on the road so much and moved back to Peoria."

"He wanted a leave of absence to consider running for political office."

"He joined PETA."

Maybe they should make a t-shirt indicating that, so you don't have to
keep telling all those people!--

"Don't monkey with the wheel!"
