I remember reading somewhere that Lemon oil / Orange oil softens the glue in joints (causing creeping joints, if the joint is under tension). Definitely to be avoided.

I use Hill violin cleaner/polish and a soft microfiber cloth. I would
NOT use furniture polish on a good hurdy gurdy. It would dull the
tone. When in doubt, ask the maker.
