Indiana Hurdy-Gurdy Workshop
The first Hurdy-Gurdy workshop in the Midwest will take place on April 20-22, 2012 in scenic Brown County, Indiana, attracting both amateurs and professionals. Learn and play alongside other enthusiasts in a relaxed atmosphere with renowned teachers and performers. Instructors: *Robert Green* has performed concerts of 18th-century music for hurdy-gurdy throughout the US, France and Israel. His book The Hurdy-Gurdy in Eighteenth-Century France was published by Indiana University Press. He co-authored the article on the hurdy-gurdy for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He released two recordings of eighteenth-century music for hurdy-gurdy on the FOCUS label. He is Professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University and has been Visiting Professor and Research Scholar at Indiana University. *Juan Wijngaard* build his first hurdy gurdy in 1976 when he was living in London. He was a founder member of the band Blowzabella before moving to the West Country. Juan's repertory is mainly French and Spanish traditional music which he plays in the bands *Stop s'il Vous Plait *and *¡Viva la Pepa! * respectively. *Tom Lozano* plays mainly Spanish traditional music as well as his own compositions. He has been a fun of the gurdies since he was 17 years old, but only started to played one in 1999 when he finally got his first instrument. He plays solo and with *¡Viva la Pepa!* and *Daily Bred*. Instructional content/goals: *Robert Green* will teach a class focusing on techniques and repertory from the baroque period. He will give a presentation on *"The Hurdy-Gurdy in French Culture"* that will involve history as well as literature and art. *Juan Wijngaard* will be offering intermediate/advanced technique and repertory of modern/traditional music as well as basic Hurdy-Gurdy set-up. *Tomas Lozano* will be introducing beginners to the beguiling and beloved world of the ancient instrument referred to as the Hurdy-Gurdy. He will guide beginners on technique, simple melodies and Spanish repertoire.
