Hi all, (I tried posting this earlier and it was apparently eaten by the Group. Or maybe Alden has to approve it because I included an image, so if you see this twice at some point, my apologies.)
I've been asked by Robert Mandel to post information on an instrument he'd like to sell. A photo is available here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/223919/mandel-gurdy.jpg The instrument was made by Robert, inspired by the famous drawing of Jacques Callot, the 17th-century French artist, who included the instrument in his famous drawing, "Capitano di Baroni" (Captain of the barony), which shows a beggar in the Spanish Netherlands playing such an instrument (see http://www.hurdy-gurdy.org.uk/baroni.html, where Neil Brook has posted a copy of the drawing—but note that this instrument is unrelated to Neil’s work). According to Robert, the style probably most accurately represents a good, professional instrument from the late 1500s, even though Callot shows a beggar playing it. The instrument is in maple and mahogany and features metal tangents, three chanterelles and three drones, full sympathetics, and Schaller (mechanical) tuning pegs. It is currently strung with Thomastik Dominant strings. (Robert says it could be fitted with another drone string—and it has the peg for it—but at present it has three.) Robert’s asking price is 3200€. I've also posted a sound clip of Robert playing the instrument: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/223919/Susato.mp3 If any one is interested in finding out more about it, send me a mail and I will put you in touch with Robert directly.
