Hi.. I might be the driver version in ubuntu 10.10 that is the cause of this... that is my best guess
Try to run a aptitude show nvidia-current and send me the output... else try to run: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates && apt-get update and rerun the script...
