If I remember correctly, ALSA sequencer devices are multiclient, but the
raw devices are exclusive. Also, I recall situations where opening a
MIDI device in raw mode prevented the ALSA sequencer counterpart from
being available for use.

Which makes sense (at least for output), as raw devices don't have any
functionality of merging events from raw device client and ALSA
sequencer client. I'm almost sure it affects MIDI input as well.

The best way to check it would be running JACK in -X raw mode, and
checking if MIDI input in Hydrogen (the ALSA sequencer version) still
works. I bet it doesn't, but don't take my word for it.
