Lack of focus has killed several projects (including my own projects).
It's hard enough to make a very good drum machine.

The current sample playback engine might benefit from some extra work,
sure. Adding some sample editing/processing functionality is a great
idea, too.

On the other hand, turning a drum machine into a generic sequencer or
building in a fully-featured subtractive synthesizer is probably
counterproductive. Especially when you can use Hydrogen together with
other sequencers (say, qtractor) and instruments (zynaddsubfx,
fluidsynth, LV2 synths like Rudolf 556). The "everything but the kitchen
sink" approach usually fails.

(sure, improving the old code is much more annoying than developing new
things, but what makes software amazing is the attention to detail, not
lots of unrelated or unfinished new features)
