Thank you Sebastian,

I figured out thet Ubuntu 10.04.4 comes with Qt 4.6.2 and the
setPlaceholderText property has been introduced in Qt 4.7.

I will wait few more days for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to come out, which will
solve my problem :)
