There's a feature request feature at hyperlatex.sourceforge.net, which
you can find by clicking here and there.  Could I ask you to enter this?

There's an idxmods.hlx in the contrib folder of the distribution that
addresses this.  I haven't tested it much, but it's there for
precisely this purpose.  Look inside it for documentation.
