The problem with non-ECC memory is that it can and at scale,
almost certainly will, cause subtle program bugs or, worse, permanent data
corruption.  Read the following post from the Hadoop mailing list:

My wording is a little extreme, but I want to discourage people from even
considering it.  I'll change it to STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
