James Dickson just uploaded a patch to Thrift that makes it compile with MSVC (no MinGW or Cygwin):
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-1031 They did this specifically so that they could run a Windows client that talks to Hypertable running on Linux.
