CRYPTOLOGIST BREAKS SETI@HOME CODE
by Dave Murphy, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

INTRODUCTION
SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is a
scientific effort aiming to determine if there is intelligent life out
in the universe. There are many methods that SETI scientific
teams use to search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Many of
these search billions of radio frequencies that flood the
universe, looking for another civilization that might be
transmitting a radio signal. Other SETI teams search by
looking for signals in pulses of light emanating from the stars.

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-
connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free
program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data
collected from the radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The
project is co-sponsored by The Planetary Society and the
University of California, Berkeley.

RECENT FINDINGS
Recently, the SETI@Home project and the millions of users
who donate processor cycles to the effort, began receiving
initially anomalous spikes in their downloaded work units. The
spikes were spurious at first; however, after reviewing more
than 10 million spikes the scientists in both Arecibo and
Berkeley began detecting a repeating pattern of 0's and 1's.

THE PATTERN
The pattern, initially considered to be random background
noise, has repeated itself thousands of times during the last
year. The pattern is:
101101010101011010101011011010101101011010101011010110101010101010

Initially, the pattern was discarded by scientists as an anomaly
until William F. Friedman, a noted cryptologist, recognized a
pattern similar to one that he had repeated while attending a
recent seminar on computer operating systems of the next
generation. The pattern is the binary representation of the
mantra that was repeated by the seminar attendees.

A WELL ROUNDED BOYHOOD
Friedman credits his young life as a Boy Scout with his ability
to break the alien code. He recognized the pattern as a
Morse code signal.

The single 1's represent dots, double 1's represent dashes.
The 0's are separators.

Recalling the code he learned many decades before, Friedman
was able to quickly interpret the alien code as the truth it is:
"Linux Rules."
