Thanks for the clarification on this point.

Let me suggest a stragety to you can employ: if you think 
someone is asking an unreasonable question or being rude
you can ask a netural question (as I did in this case) to 
verify what is actually happening before you correct them. 

The behavior "I'm not sure what you are saying so I'll just
slap you" always needs to be addressed when it happens.
