Hi,

The way I usually do Brazilian Portuguese accents in XFree86 is as follows:

setfont -v lat1-16.psfu.gz
loadkeys /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us-acentos.map.gz

then disable Xkb in XF86Config

This allows me just to compose accented characters by combinig keystrokes on a
standard US keyboard. I dont care for translation of error messages, fullfledged
internationalization or the Brazilian keyboard (ABNT). I just want to use
accented characters with a standard keyboard. The scheme above has been working
very well for me for years.

Recently I upgraded one of my systems do XFree86 4.0.1 and found out the new
version does not support my cl-gd5434 video card very well. I decided to
downgrade again. What happens now is that everything works but I can no longer
use accents or even the characters used to compose them, quotes, double quotes
and so on.

Additionally, I have been getting tons of messages like this:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C
Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers

I am not even sure this is an i18n issue, but I have already lost two days over
this and am getting quite desperate. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

TIA
