So, the problem is not the keyboard or the ability to use Lao, but the fonts recognized or not. Have you antialiasing enabled or not ? It makes a difference, as with AA enabled, the font handling in Gtk2 (and probably KDE3 too) is done trough Xft, and otherwise it is done trough old XFDL names (those -misc-foo-... names). Probably the other fonts don't have Lao glyphs (the "empty box" is shown in such case). A nice program to test is "yudit", an unicode editor. As you can easily change the configuration in your $HOME/.yudit/... to select exactly the font you want to use for display, and so be sure it works or not. > I was suggested by someone that might be missing Lao codepages. I'm able to see Lao with "yudit" and Code2000 (for that I add "code200.ttf" to the list of ttf fonts to use in the yudit config file; and put the code2000.ttf in a scanned directory). I didn't tested the other fonts you told, but they declare to have unicode chars at the Lao positions, so it should be ok I suppose.
