Actually there are two implementation of the XLookupString in the Xlib
namely a 'core protocol' one and an XKB replacement for this subroutine.
And the XKB's XLookupString does this 'HACKing' from its birth.
XKB is currently off by default on the Xsun bundled with Solaris, so unless
you've turned it on (+kb on the command line), it's probably not the XKB version
of XLookupString. (You can easily check with xdpyinfo | grep XKEYBOARD.)

P.S. You'll find xscope on http://keithp.com/~keithp/download/ .
You'll also find a version in /usr/openwin/demo/xscope on Solaris, but it
doesn't include extension decoding as Keith's does (although I don't think
his version decodes XKB yet).
