  I don't know about what KDE applet do but gswitchit shows a current
xkb group.  If you set the layout as "lt, lt(us)" each layout in this list
will occupate a separate xkb group.  It means the gswitchit will show
your switching between layouts without any additional changes.

  As far as I know gswitchit allows to configure a symbols map but it
is not configuration of gswitchit itself.  It has a special applet for XKB
configuring.
  BTW gswitchit was designed for working with the new multi-layout scheme and
an XML format 'registry' of supported layouts.  But since there is not way
to detect does the current XFree support multi-layout (except to check
the version) the author cut of this functionality in the latest release.
  You can contact with the author of gswitchit to learn how to rebuild it
for full functionality.
