That's so true. I had to develop a brand new map to properly support the
french keyboard in latin1 and latin9 modes.

Please send me any updates so that they can be published. I'm in the
process of publicating my old stuff on my website (externe.net) - just
published the ISO/CAN CSA approved canadian keyboard maps 2 weeks ago.
The other keyboards and french settings should follow soon.

It was not designed from scratch- in fact it is based on the early work
of Rene Cougnenc who did a lot of francisation of GNU/Linux in the early
nineties.
His work was also ignored by most distributions, never mind the fact
that most french speaking users did use his keymaps.
I can not claim the layout is purely mine - if only in respect of
Rene's memory.
