Run uxterm rather than xterm and switch to a UTF-8 locale (for example
en_US.UTF-8).

Unfortunately I can't run uxterm nor xterm. There is a bug pending which prevents me from running them.

xterm fatal pty error 23 (errno=22) on tty /dev/pts/2

on a linuxppc machine with glibc 2.3.1 and 2.4.20
