Catholic Saints are those that dedicate their life to faith in God and bring
their actions and beliefs in line with his perfection. Ultimately they attempt
to lead exemplary lives and after attaining heaven are granted the title Saint.
Originally Saints were martyrs who died for their faith but they are also
individuals that have shown profound devotion and faith through their acts
during their life.

St. Francis of Assisi is an illustration of following Jesus instruction to the
rich young man who asked what he should to do to be saved: "Go and sell all
that you have, and give the money to the poor. Then come, follow me." (Matthew
19:21). The son of an affluent Italian businessman, Francis gave up the
wealth, and comfort of prosperity and fame. He adopted poverty, and became a
beggar and a friend of the poor, dividing the worship and compassion of Jesus.
He lived the Christian years in gratefulness, compassion and humbleness. This
is what St. Dominic also accomplished. He has been lifted up as a scholar and
theologian, an excellent preacher, and a very holy man dedicated to Christ, an
example for those who want to go after Christ by using their emotions and mind.

"To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and
peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 1:7) "Paul and
Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in
Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:" (Philippians 1:1) "So then you are no
longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also
members of the household of God." (Ephesians 2:19). This is the letter of St.
Paul the Apostle to the churches, called all believers saints. People who are
close and devoted to Jesus Christ are called Catholic Saints.

Today the Catholic Church only recognizes Saints they do not actually make a
person a saint. I find this to be a rather contradictory statement. The
majority of Saints are patron saints and patronize a specific, idea, cause,
people or country. Each religion has their own saints at there are over 10,000
catholic saints.

There is a story behind every Saints holiness. These stories depict the events
that caused that individual to achieve sainthood. There are particular symbols
and icons that are associated with each Saint. These symbols were important
tools as they allowed illiterate individuals to understand religion. Many
saints stories have been recorded pictorially. A Saint's belongings typically
turned into holy relics once the individual achieved sainthood and are
considered priceless.

Many Catholics give honor to specific Saints and many Catholic Saints also have
their own celebration or day. Since a Saint is in heaven with god it is thought
that they can intercede and help those back on earth.

The church must canonize an individual in order to become a Saint. That
individuals life with be closely investigated and sainthood is bestowed on by a
committee in Rome. It can take many years to become a Saint and most
canonization occurs after that person's death. That individual must perform two
miracles during his or her life or after their death.
